Base metal thermocouples represent one of the most widely adopted temperature-measurement technologies across industry due to their stable thermoelectric behaviour, broad operating range, and cost-effective durability. Made with nickel, iron, and copper based alloys, these sensors exhibit predictable Seebeck response characteristics, and provide constant thermal tracking in medium and high temperature regimes.
Base-metal thermocouples provide good resistance to mechanical fatigue, vibration, oxidation, and cyclic thermal loading when properly designed with mineral insulated (MI) construction, ceramic insulators, and high-integrity sheath materials. Types K, J, T, E, and N remain the primary classifications, serving environments ranging from cryogenic systems up to ~1300°C, depending on metallurgical composition.
For process industries that require fast roll response, high repeatability, and robust field reliability in either a heavy industrial or continuous processing environment, base metal thermocouples serve as a practical and well understood means of measurement.

Protection tubes – which are ceramic, alloy, or composite – are used where the environment includes high thermal flux, molten metals, slag, carburisation, or chemical attack.
