Thermocouple Cables
Thermocouple cables are specialized electrical conductors that transmit signals generated by thermocouple sensors to measurement instruments without degradation of the signals. These cables ensure the thermoelectric characteristics of the thermocouple circuit are preserved, allowing accurate temperature readings to be transmitted throughout industrial and commercial settings.
Tempsens offers thermocouple extension and compensation cables manufactured to the Seebeck coefficient of the associate thermocouple types—including Type K (Chromel-Alumel), Type J (Iron-Constantan), Type T (Copper-Constantan), Type E (Chromel-Constantan), and noble metal types R and S (Platinum-Rhodium alloys). The cables are constructed from conductors from 20 AWG to 24 AWG and with insulation materials including PVC, fiberglass, silicone rubber and PTFE to suit different temperature ranges and environmental conditions. Simplex, duplex and multipair types of cables are available from distances of installations to the remote sensors while maintaining an accuracy level to have a reading within ±0.5°C to ±2.2°C according to IEC 60584.

About Thermocouple Cables
Key Features of Thermocouple Cables
- Temperature Range of the Insulation: PVC insulation from -20°C to +105°C. Fiberglass braids rated for 400°C continuous use. Silicone rubber rated for -60°C to +180°C. Flat PTFE rated for extending service up to 260°C in extreme environments.
- Multi-Conductor Configurations: Available with 2-wire (simplex), 4-wire (duplex), or multipair (up to 24 measurement points) configurations for unique cable runs.
- Shielding Choices: Tinned copper braid or aluminum-polyester foil, or a combination shielding approach with a shielding effectiveness ranging from 85-95% for EM noise in an electrically noisy environment.
- Conductor Construction: stranded conductor designs from 7×0.2mm up to 19×0.18mm to provide good flexibility routing through duct-work ac while remaining mechanical robust.
- Jacket Options: Outer jackets constructed of PVC, silicone, or fiberglass rated to resist oils, acids, alkalis, and abrasion in rugged industrial environments.
- Accuracy Specifications: Extension grade cable certified to ±2.2°C or ±0.75% accuracy or compensation cables certified for either Type R or Type S noble metal thermocouples, to the limit of temperature limits.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to frequently asked questions related to Thermocouple Cables.
Standard thermocouples have a 2-wire or (Positive and Negative Leg) configuration; the 3-wire adds the ground wire providing shielding and safety in electrically-noisy environments, but again, Thermocouples operate 2-wire inherently unlike the RTD style of temperature sensing.
Thermocouple cables can reach lengths of 300-500 meters depending on the gauge of wire and the electromagnetic interference (EMI) in the environment; anything beyond that, it is recommended to utilize signal amplifiers or signal transmitters to prevent noise related errors and to maintain an accurate measurement.
The temperature rating of the thermocouple cable varies based on insulation type. PVC insulation can be rated in the range of -20°C to +105°C, while fiberglass braided cable can be continuous up to 400°C. Silicone rubber feeling can maintain -60 Celsius to +180 °C, while Teflon insulation can operate applications down to -200 Celsius to up to 260 Celsius.
