Temperature Measurement in Induction Forging

What is induction forging?

Induction heating is a non-contact process which uses the principle of electromagnetic induction to produce heat in a workpiece/object. When a conductive material placed into a strong alternating magnetic field, electric current flow in the material, and cause Heating.

Induction forging uses induction to heat metal parts before they are shaped or ‘deformed’ by presses or
hammers.

Where is it used?

Induction forging is widely used in the metal and foundry industries to heat billets, bars and bar ends. Metals commonly forged with Induction systems include aluminum, brass, copper, steel and stainless steel.

Requirement of Pyrometer / Temperature Measurement

The temperature of the workpiece before forging is one of the most important parameters. The temperature is depending on the material and process between 950 °C and 1250 °C. The forged blanks are preheated to gasfired or induction heated furnaces and therefore cannot be measured directly with conventional thermocouples. For gas stoves only the internal temperature of the furnace is measured, but not the workpiece itself. In inductively heated furnaces also thermocouple measurement does not apply.

So, the Pyrometer can detect Temperature Accurately, Fast & from Safe Distance. Also we can control Power & Production speed from Pyrometer and SAVE Energy.

Selection of Right pyrometer is very important here. Because there are few factors which can impact on Temperature measurement like Dust/Smoke/Steam/Scale, Object Size.

We are supplying AST A250, AST A450+, AST A450C& AST A450C+ Pyrometers for the Induction Forgingto measure Billet Temperature. They are also used to measure Job temperature at Press Exit (before Quenching) in some plants.
