Power and Distribution Industries

Tempsens offered fiber optic temperature sensing (FOTS) is ideal for monitoring the temperature of oil-filled transformers and cast resin transformers. Temperature sensors from Tempsens are completely immune to EMI/RFI and high-voltage environments, making them suitable for monitoring transformer winding hot spots. For power and distribution equipment, Tempsens has developed accurate, real-time smart grid temperature monitoring solutions.

Challenges Faced By Our Customers

For a long time, fiber optic temperature monitoring systems have been used in high-voltage oil-filled transformers and are now the preferred method of temperature monitoring. Transmission and distribution (T&D) companies can benefit from cost-effective fiber optic sensors. Utilities can operate the transformer at peak capacity by monitoring temperatures at each transformer winding hot spot, avoiding overload conditions that can drastically reduce the transformer’s life. This efficiency in transmission throughput and service life can result in annual savings of a few million dollars, making direct winding temperature sensing a must-have feature.  Tempsens FOTS solution is already being used in cast resin transformers, thanks to its solutions and industry-leading cost points.

Smart grid transformer temperature monitoring is made even more attractive by Tempsens low-cost fiber optic temperature sensing technology. Fiber optic temperature probes for oil-filled transformers are made of high-dielectric strength materials like Teflon and polyimide coated silica fibre to withstand long-term immersion in transformer oil and kerosene desorption during production. The fiber sensor signal is transmitted from the Tempsens optical temperature transmitter to the probe installed directly at the transformer winding hot spot locations via a special tank wall feed-through. The temperature outputs from Tempsens fiber optic temperature transmitters are fed into real-time monitoring and control software via an external control cabinet. Operators can monitor load conditions in real-time with Tempsens optical temperature sensors, reducing waste energy production and lowering environmental impact.
